Studious Motivation: getting Alice’s 100cm of lace trim

The Lace Trim line counts only lace trim accessories laid on the finished dress, one centimetre per centimetre of trim. Lace fabric does not count, however much of the dress it covers. Gothic 40 and Romantic 25 are the easy part.

  1. Sew a Gothic, Romantic dress in any fabric you like. A velvet and a lace-on-silk fabric took a dress to Gothic 86 and Romantic 58 before any trim went on, while Lace Trim still read 0 of 100.
  2. In the accessory shop, set Type to Lace Trim. Only what that filter shows counts toward the 100cm. It is sold by length, and a metre of it came to 96cm on the card in one run, so buy a little more than a metre.
  3. Draw the lace on in strands. While you draw, a counter shows how much of your lace you have used, and when you finish the strand the card’s Lace Trim line goes up by the same amount in centimetres.
  4. Finish only when Lace Trim reads 100 or more. Going over is fine: dresses at 109 and 144 of 100 both passed. Check the numbers first in the commission checker before you hand it over.
  1. Alice wants a dress that will help to motivate her to study.

How the centimetres add up

  2. Second strand, 21cm88/100 ✗
  3. Third strand, 8cm96/100 ✗
  4. Two more strands, 13cm109/100 ✓
One dress, strand by strand. A metre of lace ran out at 96, four short, and a second purchase finished it.

The trim you draw is measured in metres on the placement counter and in centimetres on the card, so 0.67m on the counter is 67 on the card. The lace also adds a little Romantic: the dress above went from 58 to 61 as the trim went on.

Lace that counts, and lace that does not

In the shop asExamplesCounts toward 100cm?
Fabric, type LaceLace on Pink Silk, Ebony Lace, Black Lace, French floral black lace, ivory laceNo. It helps Gothic and Romantic but leaves Lace Trim at 0.
Accessory, type Lace TrimPink Daisy Lace, White Daisy Lace, Pink and Violet Sunshine Lace, Harvest, Pale Pink and Lavender Tiara LaceYes, by the centimetre.

The daisy and sunshine laces carry Cute 5, Playful 5 and Romantic 3; the tiara laces carry Romantic 5 with a little Formal, Cute, Elegant and Playful. Either kind helps with Romantic 25. A patch fixed some lace trim items that had not been tagged as lace trim, so a lace that did not count before may count now.

When the lace floats or tilts

  • Floating off the fabric

Raise the trim until it starts to flatten, then tilt it up or down until it lies against the dress.

  • Facing the wrong way

Lace faces the way you drag it. Remove the strand and draw it in the other direction: flipping lace.

  • Too long, or in the wrong place

Click one of the strand’s red pins to open its panel, where you can resize or remove it. There is no undo, so check before you press Remove.

The rest of the trim tools, and the placement keys, are on lace trim and accessories.

Alice’s order

She asks for it plainly: “Please would you make me a garment that is gothic and romantic? It should feature elements of lace.” The lace in that sentence becomes the 100cm rule on the card, and she pays 250 for it.

Dressmaker | New Release | First Look | Part 1Cem Black · 7:56:19 · from 3:38:30Starts as Alice explains why she wants a new dress; the lace trim goes on about half an hour later.

Delivered, she thanks you with “I am grateful for your efforts, kind stranger.” Her spirits have their own cards and opinions, on Alice’s page. If Gothic or Romantic stalls a few points short and more lace does not move it, see a tag that will not go up.
