Dressmaker Wiki

Cheaper Dressmaker fabrics, with the trade-offs visible

A cheaper fabric can keep the one tag you need and still ruin another requirement. Compare price, colour, unlock rank and the scores that fall before replacing silk or velvet.

If a card explicitly requires Silk or Velvet, preserve that material and its required share. Cotton with the same Elegant score does not count as silk, and a similar colour does not guarantee the same style scores. Check material and colour shares.

Three swaps to compare before you shop

Elegant: 50 → 50

Blush Pink Velvet80 gold/m · rank 0Velvet · Pink
Barbara Pink Silk50 gold/m · rank 0Silk · Pink

Save 30 gold per metre used. Keeps pink and the same Elegant, Formal and Romantic fabric scores. Warm disappears and Glamour falls; the surface also changes from velvet to silk.

Formal: 50 → 50

Stormy Blue Silk50 gold/m · rank 0Silk · Blue
Blue Pansy Gradient Silk30 gold/m · rank 1Silk · Blue / Yellow

Save 20 gold per metre used. Keeps the Formal and Elegant fabric scores for less gold, but adds yellow. A gradient containing yellow is not a blue-only replacement.

Elegant: 50 → 50

Stormy Blue Silk50 gold/m · rank 0Silk · Blue
Blue Floral Abstract Print Cotton30 gold/m · rank 0Cotton · Blue

Save 20 gold per metre used. Keeps blue and the Elegant fabric score. Formal and Eveningwear disappear, and the fabric becomes a flower print. Use it for an Elegant goal only after checking the other lines.

The swatches compare the materials. A sewn dress also depends on the pattern, layout and decoration; these are not matching finished-dress screenshots.

Used material and gold paid at the shop are different

  1. Check your stock first. Using fabric you already own can avoid a new purchase, even if its shop price is high.
  2. Keep the original cutting layout until you know the replacement covers the pieces. Swapping fabric does not reduce the area of a pattern.
  3. Compare the price for the quantity you will actually buy. A per-metre saving is not a promise that a whole dress will cost that amount.
  4. Before delivering, check every style line, any maximum, colour rule, material share and required accessory in the commission checker.

The dress planner estimates consumed material. Its panel areas do not include a verified cutting layout or a measured shopping list for your client, so leave room for cutting waste.

Spend on the part that matters

Style scores and material shares use different rules. A small collar can contribute a fabric tag, but a tiny piece of velvet may not satisfy a Velvet share. For a failed dress, compare the three repair examples before recutting anything.
