Dressmaker quality: getting to 75, 80 and 100%

Every commission card on record starts with a Quality line, and Quality is decided at two stations: the cutting table and the sewing machine. Here is what a developer says counts, and how to rescue a dress that fell short.

Paper pattern pieces on strawberry-print cotton, each with a horizontal arrow, several labelled Grain Quality: 100%.
Every piece laid with its arrow running across the fabric reads Grain Quality: 100%. Image: Cozy Lives / Free Lives, from the Steam store page.

The two things that set Quality

A player at Quality 61 of 75 asked what they were missing. A developer answered with two points:

“correctly aligning your panels to the grain line when you cut them out. With how the fabric is oriented in game, this means that the arrows on the panels should be horizontal, and the game should show you 100% when you lay them out.”

“you also gain more quality by sewing correctly and not going too far off of the guide line.”

So: turn every piece until its arrow runs left to right and its label reads 100% before you cut, then sew slowly enough to stay on the line. The player had asked whether they needed more expensive fabric; neither of the two points is about fabric, and the player replied that the arrows had been the problem.

Sewing Assist

There is a setting for the sewing half. A Steam tips guide: “In settings, you can turn on ‘Sewing Assist’ to help achieve 100% quality while sewing (just go slow around corners - you can do this by pressing S on your keyboard a few times).” Written in a Steam community tips guide W and S are the speed keys the sewing screen shows.

Already sewn and still short

You do not have to start over or buy new fabric. The developer’s fix:

“You can use the Seam Ripper (the button in the mannequin view) to click on sewn panels to unsew them, and drag these panels into your inventory. Then in the cutting table view you can drag them from the inventory to the recycling basket (it shows up in the bottom right while you're dragging) to get your fabric back and turn the panel back into the paper with the grain line for you to recut.”

From a developer's answer on r/Dressmaker about the seam ripper

The same developer adds: “There isn't a way to check which ones are cut incorrectly.” One player’s tip in the same thread: if the offcut is still on the table, compare the holes in it with each piece to find the one cut at an angle. Some players report the recycle basket not returning fabric or a pattern piece vanishing after unpicking; both are on known bugs.

How much Quality the cards ask for

Across the 36 cards on the commission finder with a Quality floor, the requirement runs from 60 to 80:

  • Quality 601 card
  • Quality 703 cards
  • Quality 759 cards
  • Quality 771 card
  • Quality 8022 cards

One card is left out of that count because it may work the other way. Prudence’s Not Haughty wants an uncomfortable dress, and the history screenshot ticks it at Quality 62 of 70, so it looks like a ceiling. The card does not print (Max), and players on Steam report it that way. Reported in a Steam discussion about a commission that wants low quality

The 100% achievement

99 Problems But A Stitch Aint One asks for one dress at 100% quality. Steam counts 65.9% of players with it. Every other achievement is on all 32 achievements.
