Prudence Mortimer
Prudence is the second client and the loudest. Her first card, Flamboyant Funeral, is the one funeral dress where black is banned. Later cards show why she needs the Duke to notice her, and one of them fails if you sew it too well.

Who Prudence is
Her opening line is an order to close the shop, so that no other lady in Twillford can catch the Duke’s eye. When asked her name: “My name is Prudence Mortimer. You may call me Duchess Prudence Mortimer.” The Duke is Duke Hassan, whose uncle’s funeral sets off the first event, and her aim is stated flatly on a later visit: “Which is why it is absolutely imperative that I win the affections of Duke Hassan.”
The reason is the story of her second card. Her brother inherited the family estate, and “If people were to discover that my younger brother treats me as his unpaid maid, I would be made a laughingstock in polite society.” She asks you to keep it quiet. If she crosses him, she says, he could turn her out along with her young nieces, and one of her later cards is for a niece who is ill. She also asks, more than once, for somewhere to faint: “Should I wish to swoon, I will require a suitably soft surface to land upon.”
Prudence’s commissions
Everyone else will wear black, so she wants the opposite: “As such, you will make for me a glamorous, elegant dress in the most arresting colour possible. Nothing black!” and “Make it so that it is impossible for the Duke to overlook his future Duchess. Cost is no object.” The card sets Elegant 65, the highest Elegant on any card. Start from velvet. If you land a couple of points short on Elegant, add an accessory that carries it, such as a pearl shank button.
