Shop rank and prestige: how it rises, and what each rank unlocks

Your shop rank is your prestige rounded down, from 0 to 50; it sits under your gold as, for example, Rank 7 – Novice III. Each new rank puts that rank’s new fabrics, and usually some accessories, in the shop, and every rank adds 1% to what a dress sells for. Prestige comes from dresses, but the dresses count for less and less; the big jumps come from the newspaper.

Rank 1 adds 16 fabrics and 6 accessories. By now the shop sells 172 of 348 fabrics and 121 of 330 accessories.

Where prestige comes from

Passed commission1 point, scaled down (below).
Failed commissionA quarter point, scaled down. You are still paid the budget.
Selling a dressQuality ÷ 100 points, scaled down: a Quality 100 dress sold off the rack is worth as much as a passed commission. Selling for gold is on off the rack.
GiftNothing when the gift lands; a quarter point, scaled down, when it misses. More on gifts.
Newspaper report2 to 4.5 points, never scaled down, once per report.

Why your rank slows down

Everything that comes from a dress is multiplied by 6 ÷ (6 + the dresses you have finished so far). Commissions and dresses you sold both count as finished dresses; gifts do not. Your first dress is worth a full point, the seventh half a point, and the sixtieth about a tenth. Here is what a run of passed cards (or Quality 100 sales) adds up to on its own:

So dresses alone stall in the teens and twenties. The 13 newspaper reports that can appear add 39.5 points between them, and with all of them read, about 27 such dresses reach rank 50. A sale counts as a finished dress too, so selling adds prestige but makes every later card worth a little less.

The newspaper reports and what they are worth

Each report runs once, the next time you are at the front desk after its commission is handed in, whether the dress passed or failed. The commission that sets each one off:
