The Duke’s funeral: three dresses, three colour rules
The old duke’s death brings the first three commissions after the tutorial, all for the same funeral and all at Quality 75 with a budget of 300. What separates them is black: one client bans it, one allows nothing else, and one wants at least half of it.

Why each client wants what she wants
Prudence
She wants to stand out to the Duke while everyone else is in black: “As such, you will make for me a glamorous, elegant dress in the most arresting colour possible. Nothing black!”
Priya
The dead duke was her uncle and the new one is her brother, and she means to scare off his suitors: “I need a dress that is formal and gothic. It must not be too colourful, of course. Imagine, someone wearing a bright dress to a funeral!”
Marie
New to Twillford and attending out of respect: “It must be simple, formal and elegant. Very demure, very mindful of the occasion.”

Formal and Elegant each appear twice, but never on the same two cards, so there is no one dress to adapt for all three. The easiest pair to plan together is Priya’s and Marie’s: both want Formal 50, and a dress that is entirely black already meets Marie’s half-black rule. Marie adds Elegant 40 and Simple 40 on top. Prudence’s Elegant 65 is the steepest goal of the three, and it has to be reached without black.
Getting Prudence’s Elegant 65
It is the hard one of the three, and black is off the table. Velvet fabric and an elegant white lace accessory get you most of the way. If you keep landing a couple of points short on Elegant, add an accessory that carries it, such as a pearl shank button. Accessories unlock just after her card arrives, so you will have them for this dress.
After the funeral
The town gossip paper, Spilt Tea, reports on the funeral once the three dresses are delivered. It describes the dresses you made, so a red dress for Prudence is named as red, and it may call Priya’s forbidding and praise Marie’s as sensible. It also reports Marie in serious conversation with Duke Hassan, and Priya and Prudence nearly coming to blows.
What happens around them
Flamboyant Funeral is the second card of the game, straight after Rose’s tutorial dress. Accessories unlock after it, before Priya arrives; the off-the-rack card appears just after Marie’s card arrives. The full order, with the unlock prompts, is on the walkthrough. Every requirement here needs Quality 75, the first cards where 75 is the bar; getting 100% quality covers grain and seams.
The achievement
Complete all the dresses for the Duke's funeral. That earns Laid To Dress, held by 74.5% of Steam players, the most of any event achievement: most players finish all three. The events after it thin out quickly, as the achievement list shows.
