Perfect Picnic: picking fabric for Marie’s dress
Marie wants a picnic dress for a friend’s tour of Twillford. Start with embroidered cotton that carries all four requested style tags, then check the cut and sewing before handing it over.
The five lines to pass
| Requirement | Minimum | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Quality | 80+ | Grain, fit and sewing |
| Patterned | 50+ | Fabric, pattern and accessory tags |
| Cool | 50+ | Fabric, pattern and accessory tags |
| Daywear | 40+ | Fabric, pattern and accessory tags |
| Eclectic | 40+ | Fabric, pattern and accessory tags |
The budget is 500 gold. These are minimums: going above a requested score is fine. The finished-dress scores matter, rather than the tag weights on one fabric.
Two fabrics available from the start
Both options have a shop unlock rank of zero and carry every requested style tag. Use them as starting fabrics, then inspect the design’s totals; a pattern can add or subtract points.
| Fabric | Gold / metre | Patterned | Cool | Daywear | Eclectic |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 100 | 50 | 50 | 50 | |
| 15 | 100 | 50 | 50 | 50 |
Search those names in the fabric finder to compare swatches and alternatives. Pink Kaleidoscope is a useful starting point when you want a busy print; Teal Embroidered Diamond gives you the same four required tags in a different colour.
Build in three checks
- Choose the fabric for the big pieces. Put a fabric that carries all four tags on the bodice and skirt. Check the sleeves and collar too: switching a smaller piece to an unrelated fabric can lower a score. Use the fabric share planner to compare a mixed-fabric design.
- Check the pattern before cutting. In the dress designer, combine your chosen patterns and fabrics. If Cool falls short, look for a negative Cool contribution from the pattern or a fabric with a lower Cool weight. A winter-looking print does not tell you its actual tags.
- Finish the quality check. Align pieces to the grain, fit the mannequin to Marie and sew clean seams. If the style lines pass but Quality does not, use the quality calculator to find which part needs work.
A finished picnic dress

You can change the silhouette and colour; the commission asks for scores, rather than an exact copy of this dress. Before delivery, enter your final numbers in the Perfect Picnic checker. For Marie’s other orders, return to Marie’s commission list.
